Corcovado is one of the hills in the city of Rio de Janeiro, famous in Brazil and worldwide for its 38-meter-tall Christ the Redeemer statue. Christ the Redeemer is one of the country’s main symbols and offers a privileged panoramic view of Rio de Janeiro. In 2003, the installation of elevators and escalators at the site was completed. Before that, visitors had to climb 220 steps to enjoy the view. On July 7, 2007, the Christ the Redeemer statue was elected one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in a vote sponsored by the UN, although it did not have official status.
